The Benefits of Using Camper Covers

Camper travel is popular and there are a number of reasons why you want to invest in quality camper covers to keep your RV and travel trailer protected, especially when you are storing it during cold winter months and not traveling.

Sun Damage

The roof of your RV isn’t going to be as durable as the one that you have on your home. Constant exposure to the sun will wear down the roof material and this dries out the caulking used to seal air conditioning units and vents. It will also dry out the paint and cause overall damage to the entire camper. Even though a cover can’t provide you with 100% UV protection, it can significantly slow down the sun damage. A cover made from polypropylene or polyester should be sufficient to block out some UV rays.

The Potential for Moisture

Moisture is not good for any travel trailer or RV. Water can pool on the roof because of dimples or sags, or it can be collected and absorbed by leaves, grass, needles, or other debris. During the hot summer months, this may not be an issue. However, during the fall and winter months, moisture on the roof might not evaporate, which means you could have a mildew and mold problem in the spring. Many RV covers will be waterproof but still be breathable. The small pores in the fabric mean moisture can evaporate but won’t allow for water droplets to get in.

Snow Damage

If you live in a northern environment then you need to think about the snow. Even just a few inches of accumulated snow on your camper can cause some significant damage. It will be even more of a problem if there are some quick thaw and freeze cycles during the season.

Protect from Dirt

Unless you want to constantly be washing your RV, a good cover is a quick and easy way to protect it from dust and dirt. The sediments can cause wear to your parts, components, and exterior over time. If you don’t have any stuck-on leaves, bird droppings, or just general mess on your RV then you are ready to go when you want to take your next trip.

Protection from Wind

Windy conditions can catch traps and then cause them to billow out. This is why a snug-fitting cover is important. A billowing tarp can cause strain on bungee cords, ropes, or straps that hold it in place and this can cause damage when they smack against your camper.

Window Seals

The right cover is going to be big enough in order to cover all the windows. Keeping your windows covered protects the seals around the windows from thaw and freeze cycles and dry rot. This means you can get longer life from your caulking and seals.

Using Camper Covers Properly

The benefits of camper covers won’t be realized if you don’t use the cover properly. You need to choose a cover that matches the camper’s size. A cover should be snug so that it keeps out debris, bugs, and moisture. The cover should also be big enough in order to protect the whole unit from the bottom to the top. You don’t want it too large that it will move in the wind. One of the most important things you can do for the cover for the most benefit is to make sure it’s tightly secured. If it doesn’t have a tight fit then it can cause damage by allowing moisture in, flapping in the wind, or allowing water to pool in different locations.
